Randolph Roots and The Forest Fire
When a forest fire strikes nearby, Randolph experiences great stress and is called to help. In doing so, he confronts his fear and the strong emotions that can arise when danger lurks close to home.
Randolph helps bring mountain lions and other distressed animals to the safety of his mountain, which causes some disruption in his own environment. He and others learn to open their hearts, develop compassion, and trust.
This story was inspired in part by families living in fire regions, and by firefighting mothers and fathers. Re-enacting parts of this story with toy animals may help calm a child by giving her a sense of empowerment, as well as a chance to process any fear, strong emotions, and feelings of helplessness.
By sharing stories and opportunities to act them out, we help children gain perspective on issues that may otherwise be too big or scary.
