Give the Gift of Storytelling
Storytelling is one of the oldest and most essential skills known to humankind; a timeless parenting tool that helps families celebrate life’s joys, navigate its challenges, and raise healthy, well-adjusted kids.
Telling your own stories helps children manage their emotions, empathize with others, and better understand the complex world we live in. More importantly, it cultivates a rich and meaningful bond between you and your child, building intimacy, resilience, and trust. That’s priceless.

Telling stories with your children is one of the richest and most memorable experiences in life. In this easy-to-read book, now published in 21 languages, you’ll learn the essence of storytelling - connecting heart to heart.
Full of science, wonder, sample stories, and practical skills, it is a potent reminder that you already have everything it takes. You are the inheritor of 60,000 years of genes, culture, and tradition. It’s a treasure, your treasure, so let go of any nagging self-doubts. Awaken humbly and joyfully to the skills you already possess.
Storytelling is about much more than a story - it’s also the shared presence. When we give our real and full attention to our children, we give them something that outlasts all other gifts. You have something unique inside of you, something only you and your child can discover together. Those discoveries, even amidst the inevitable bumps and goofs, will be a stream of lifelong memories that both of you will cherish year after year.
Just ask yourself - do you remember anyone who took the time to tell you stories as a child? How do you feel about them right now? Creating those moments and memories for your own children - that’s what this book is all about.
“This is such a refreshing voice amidst the parenting noise and consumerism. Thank you for the inspiration to be a storyteller with my kid.”
Melanie, Mother of Leo (age 4)

The town of Ainsley was famous for its storytelling tree. Like magic, its branches could twist and turn into scenes from any story told underneath its canopy. All summer long storytellers gathered to tell tales, and in the fall the leaves filled every story with a mosaic of dazzling images. Come winter, its branches at first seemed bare, but between each branch silhouettes of delicate lace formed scenes of spectacular intricacy. Scenes within scenes within scenes, each sparkling with a layer of frost.
But one little girl, Annabel, is searching for a different kind of story. It’s up to her and her mother to remind the town, and themselves, that there’s more to a story than what you see. It’s also what you feel.

Sledding is a lot of fun, but most ants are sleeping throughout winter. In this silly and picturesque story, a raccoon recounts a wild night when he went sledding with two courageous ants who woke up midwinter after hearing the children laugh and play.
The tale travels from a small ant hill to a long country road, and finally to the tallest mountain in the world, K3. There, all kinds of creatures can be seen sledding and dancing in the twilight, and it’s downhill all the way around the earth.

Winter is a great time to watch for tracks in the snow. One time, while following the delicate tracks left behind by a pair of field mice, I found tire tracks spread all over the yard. They were from my car.
I staked out that night, and you guessed it - two mice were breaking into my car and doing wheelies. Well, I chased after them on my bicycle, but that’s hard to do in the snow, and then they headed for the canyon. I was pretty sore on those mice, but I had to save them.
Long story short, I lost the car but gained a couple friends.

After a pair of mice wrecked my car one wintry evening, we teamed back up to salvage the wreck. Midway in the frigid river where the vehicle lay, I ran across an old friend - the chipmunk who stole my beard.
It’s a long story, really, but suffice to say that he and a few innovative chipmunk friends used litter, a spool of thread, and a few discarded lighters to create one of the greatest spectacles I’ve ever seen. Imagine dozens of tiny, trash-bag hot air balloons lifting my demolished car from the torrent of the river. Oh, it was mighty…

These 2 stories chronicle the theft of my car one wintry evening by two galavanting young field mice. In the first story, they mostly do wheelies, but I end up saving them just before the car plummets into the Rio Grande Gorge.
The second story follows our return to the wreck, and the intrepid work of a friendly chipmunk and his cousins who use litter, a spool of thread, and a discarded lighter to build a series of miniature hot-air balloons that lift the car into the air.
